The Bus
Have you heard the phrase which includes the proverbial bus? Here’s an example: “She threw him under the bus.” I’ve heard this in conversations with business associates as well as on The Apprentice. What is this bus, really? And have I been thrown under it lately? Have you? I’m sure we all have. What it refers to is that a colleague or someone you would expect to “have your back”… didn’t. They put you on the chopping block in order to protect themselves. Notice that there is an verb in that sentence… THROW them under the bus… PUT them on the chopping block. That means there’s an action on your part (my part). Some people say it’s just a part of business. But I say NO… it doesn’t have to be that way. Next time you’re tempted to throw someone under that proverbial bus, think about your options. Think about [...]
Are you an over achiever?
Weird, the stuff I get on my minds…. but here goes… To ACHIEVE is to reach or attain (a desired objective, level, or result) by effort, skill, or courage. So an over achiever is who? Someone who tries really, really hard to reach or attain the result, right? Or does it describe someone who puts the reaching or attaining as first priority, over everything else? I don’t want to be guilty of being an over achiever. It may sound good, but that’s not what I want to be known for. So… do I slacken up, do less, have less motivation? Certainly not. But I can put less pressure on myself to “perform”. And put more of my energy into the things I feel “led” to do. I want it to be less about what I get out of it and more about what God’s doing with my life. I want [...]
Comfort Stuff
We all have our own sets of “comfort foods”, “comfort clothes” and even “comfort people”. But do you think the things you have surrounding you during the work day could be considered your “comfort stuff”? I do. This pic shows some of my “comfort stuff” that I have on my desk right now. I think I like red and green, monsters and abstract caricatures mixed with some cool Pottery Barn, paper goods, vintage metal and magnets. Eclectic I suppose. But that’s what I find interesting and what gives me inspiration when designing. If you don’t have any “comfort stuff”, it’s a good excuse to go to a flea market, auction or the mall. It’s the weekend after all!
Awareness Awareness Awareness
On the way to Georgia and back this weekend I must have counted about 9 Rotary billboards. I happen to be a new Rotary member, but if I wasn’t, I might wonder what this Rotary thing is all about. Then if someone were to talk with me about it and invite me to a meeting, there’s a good chance I would say “yes”. Billboards, ads, brochures, email campaigns and the like are great for building awareness. It takes more than one mailing, more than one call, more than one touch of any kind to create a reaction in the mind of another person or a company. So if you’re not getting the results you’re looking for, don’t give up. Keep building your identity and the awareness of what you do. You may not be into ending polio worldwide, but you have something to offer someone. You may not need a [...]
Tic Toc Tic Toc
Time doesn’t stop. The sound of the second hand keeps on sounding. I have, for the past several months, been what I call “off the hook busy”. That’s an interesting phrase and have no idea where I picked it up. Not from Mom & Dad because I called them to ask and they’d never heard it before. Go figure. Anyhow, the point is that we all are so very busy, but we will always make time for the things in our life that really matter. For me it’s a trip downtown with hubby, a call with my Sista, being encouraged at my FCCI group or serving with my fellow Rotarians. Oh, and stopping at Chik-fil-A for a caffeine-free Diet Coke. We all find time to do the things we think are important. It’s never a bad idea to turn off the tube and reevaluate our list of priorities. Is there [...]
